Land with fruit trees, a lake, a river and of course the famous and beloved Grandma’s house. As usual we are visiting the grandma again, with the family on their summer vacation. Grandma lives in an old, old house and she will never get another one. They are going to be her last grandies and her home will be the family’s place to come and visit when she dies, which she is doing every day. Grandma is not very happy about that. She has had enough of the family visits, her illness and hospital. All of them seem to forget she is dying every day. If she ever wants to speak or hear something they are all listening to their cell phones and the children run to their play room to play with their toys and Grandma sits all alone in her room waiting for them to be over. Grandma is not in the best of health herself so it seems to her the whole family is getting up there in years. The grandchildren are grown up now and the parents they don’t bother her any more. She likes the grand kids and she can see them, but not so much the parents. And it is the parents who have the money now. That is what she says and the family thinks that is why they won’t come to visit her. She has been living in that house alone now since the twins have flown the nest. They left together and with a very small suitcase, leaving behind lots of toys and clothes and also many, many memories. And they left lots of money for the hospital. The Grandma could not be happier.
There was only one visitor when the family returned home the other day. One visitor. When Grandma saw her the visit was over. One visitor. Grandma had known how the story would end. A visit that is supposed to last months, is over in minutes. So Grandma is sitting in her living room with the family gathered around her. They are holding her hands and telling her that she is too old to live by herself now. They are telling her she needs to move to her son’s home. She is asking why she needs a home if she is just going to die and they are telling her they are all going to come and live with her and help her take care of her home. Grandma has already said this to them many times and she has said it to them for years, but there is never any reply. This time she knows why they are going. That is why they are so excited and now she feels bad, but she doesn’t say anything.
The family gathers around Grandma, they hold her hands, they all tell her how much they love her and how much they miss her, and how much they will come and visit her. After a few minutes of this Grandma is feeling more than a little put out. She is telling them that they don’t have to come. She is telling them that they can visit her as much as they want, but she wants to die at home. They tell her she has to get out of that room, she has to get out of that house and go to her son’s home. So Grandma gets up and walks out the front door, she is wearing a pink house coat and a fuzzy white hat, and she is crying. The family is upset and the little girl doesn’t want to go back inside the house, but they all go in and stand around Grandma’s bed, and they all begin to talk about her.
There are no words to describe how they feel. It is like a dream. The little girl gets to pick a blanket. Grandma goes to her closet and hands her a purple blanket. They go outside and take pictures of Grandma. Grandma is standing on the front porch with the family, and the boy and the girl from the car give each other a big hug. Grandma is telling them that she wants them to be happy, but she will miss them.
The car drives away and Grandma is alone. She has lived with her son for two years, but now it is just her. She has lived in this house for a long time, but now she will have to live in this house all by herself. But Grandma has always been alone, she is used to being alone, and she knows that her son is still her son, and that her friends are still her friends, and that her son’s wife is still her son’s wife. Grandma doesn’t want to die yet, not when she has so many memories. Grandma can’t think of a single bad thing that has ever happened to her.
The sun is going down, the trees are starting to glow, and the birds are starting to tweet. Grandma is ready to go to sleep now, but it is hard to sleep now, it is hard to fall asleep when there is so much life in the world.
All children have some degree of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 5.4 million children in the United States have some form of ASD. This disorder affects 1 in 100 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Autismi on palju erinevaid. Teistel autismiga inimestel on keeruline teiste emotsioonide mõistmist.
